The Conjuring: Last Rites Reveals the Warrens' Final Case
The Conjuring Universe, a horror franchise that has grossed over $2 billion globally, is preparing to close its mainline saga with The Conjuring: Last Rites, set for release on September 5, 2025. And leading up to its release, New Line Cinema dropped a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the final chapter of Ed and Lorraine Warren’s paranormal investigations.
The newly released footage teases a dark, emotionally charged narrative, with Lorraine warning that “something’s changed” in their final case. While official plot details remain under wraps, it appears that the story, set in 1986, may draw from the real-life Smurl family haunting, a case involving demonic activity in a Pennsylvania home. This aligns with the franchise’s tradition of adapting the Warrens’ documented investigations, though creative liberties are expected to heighten the horror.
The footage also showcases plenty of supernatural terror, with haunted toys, copious jump scares, and some real spiritual horror imagery. You know, classic Warren’s stuff. The production, filmed in London starting September 2024, is backed by Wan and Peter Safran, with a screenplay by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, ensuring continuity with the franchise’s established tone.
As the first mainline Conjuring film to release in the fall, Last Rites aims to kick off the 2025 horror season with a climactic end to “Phase One” of the Conjuring Universe, as noted by New Line Cinema’s Richard Brener in The Hollywood Reporter. Needless to say, fans are eager to see how this finale will tie into the broader universe, including potential spinoffs (which seems extremely sensible).
While we’re patiently awaiting its release, check out the trailer for The Conjuring: Last Rites below.
