The First Trailer for Fear Street: Prom Queen Revives '80s Slasher Energy

Netflix has unveiled the chilling trailer for Fear Street: Prom Queen, the fourth installment in its acclaimed Fear Street horror franchise.

Based on R.L. Stine’s 1992 novel The Prom Queen, this standalone slasher film marks the first direct adaptation of a specific book from Stine’s iconic series after the success of the first trilogy. Directed by Matt Palmer (Calibre) and co-written with Donald McLeary, the trailer teases a nostalgic, blood-soaked 1988 prom night at Shadyside High, blending classic slasher vibes with the franchise’s signature gore and suspense.

Set in the cursed town of Shadyside, Ohio, the film follows the vicious race for prom queen among the school’s “It Girls.” The official synopsis reveals that when a gutsy outsider is unexpectedly nominated, the other candidates begin mysteriously disappearing, plunging the class of ’88 into a night of terror. The trailer itself showcases screaming teens, an axe-wielding killer in a red coat, and a blood-spattered disco ball, evoking the gritty aesthetic of 1980s slashers like Prom Night—but with a more overtly comedic spin.

The ensemble cast features rising stars and seasoned actors, including India Fowler (The Nevers) as Lori Granger, potentially a reimagined version of the book’s Lizzie McVay, alongside Ariana Greenblatt (Barbie), Fina Strazza (Paper Girls), Suzanna Son (Red Rocket), Ella Rubin (Until Dawn), with Katherine Waterston (Alien: Covenant), Lili Taylor (The Conjuring), and Chris Klein (American Pie). Naturally, the film’s R rating for “strong bloody violence and gore, teen drug use, language, and some sexual references” promises an unapologetically brutal experience.

Filmed in Toronto between March and May 2024, Fear Street: Prom Queen is produced by Chernin Entertainment, with Palmer aiming to capture the essence of a “lost slasher classic.” While not directly tied to the 2021 trilogy (Fear Street: 1994, 1978, and 1666), the trailer references the Camp Nightwing massacre, suggesting subtle connections to the broader Fear Street universe. With three more films reportedly in development, this bloody prom night is just the beginning of Shadyside’s next chapter.

Fear Street: Prom Queen premieres May 23, 2025, exclusively on Netflix, ready to deliver screams and nostalgia in equal measure. Check out the trailer below.
