South Korean R&B artist Rovv has cultivated a dedicated fan base, weaving themes of love and passion into the fabric of his music. Since his 2018 debut, he’s worked to build an impressive discography of over 50 tracks, earning millions of streams—carefully developing a signature style that echoes with strength and sensitivity. His sound, while still evolving, is a rich fusion, drawing from the core of contemporary R&B while incorporating the vibrant textures of Pop, Hip-Hop, and Trap, to assemble a distinct sonic identity.
Following a significant period that included a 17-city world tour with The Good Days Boys, Rovv is now intently focused on his upcoming solo endeavors, continuously pushing the boundaries of his established sound. His latest single, "Roll The Dice," featuring the exceptional vocals of DeVita, signals an exciting progression in his artistic journey. This new track expands into themes of risk and desire, set against a backdrop of funk-infused grooves, sophisticated R&B production, and captivating musical elements. And as a rising industry name, "Roll The Dice" perfectly offers a glimpse into Rovv's artistry, inviting his audience to embrace the unpredictable nature of life and love.
Your new single “Roll The Dice” comes just a month after your last release. What’s driving this rapid creative output, and what's a recurring element in your recent music?
Rovv: After taking about a year off, I joined an amazing team and creative family called A Mass Culture. During that break, I wrote a lot of songs that I’m now finally getting to share them one by one. These are songs I really care about, so the releases are coming naturally. I like to release the sounds and emotions I love in the moment quickly and in many forms because that energy and taste don’t stay forever. I believe music should reflect exactly how I feel at the time I’m making it.
“Roll The Dice” features DeVita, a powerhouse in Korean R&B. How did this collaboration come about, and what was it like working with her to bring the song’s themes of risk and desire to life?
Rovv: After I made the track, I thought it would be more exciting to bring in a different voice for the second verse. I played it for my close collaborator, producer Jin.K, and he immediately suggested DeVita. I agreed instantly, it just made sense. I’ve always loved her music, and I think her voice is powerful but also incredibly refined and stylish. Luckily, she was down to join, and her part added a whole new level of tension and depth to the song.
The track blends funk-inspired grooves, jazzy piano riffs, and sleek R&B production. How did you and your longtime collaborators—Youngsick, Ban Estin, and ampoff—shape this sound, and what inspired the fusion of these elements?
Rovv: It might sound funny, but I love jazz. When I hear jazz playing in the background at a restaurant, I instantly think, “Okay, this place is legit.” To me, jazz is timeless and sexy; and when that blends with funky hip-hop or R&B, it’s always magic. Youngsick, Ban Estin, and ampoff are professionals who always know exactly how to bring my sonic vision to life so I’m super grateful for them. For this track, I had a very specific image stuck in my head. Something like “cigarette smoke curling up in a casino” and I wanted to translate that mood into sound.
The lyrics of “Roll The Dice” explore surrendering to uncertainty and finding thrill in chaos. Can you share a personal experience that influenced this perspective or shaped the song’s narrative?
Rovv: Honestly, ever since I started music, my life itself has been ‘Roll The Dice’. I gave up the safe path and kept choosing uncertainty, over and over. It’s the same with love. The more I focus on the moment rather than the outcome, the more raw and honest things get—and sometimes that means more pain too. These kinds of experiences naturally shaped the lyrics of this song.
Since your debut in 2018, you’ve released over 50 tracks. How has your approach to songwriting and storytelling evolved over the past few years?
Rovv: In the past, I used to focus more on melodies and emotional sounds. Now, I approach each song like I’m building a scene or creating a character. When I write lyrics, I constantly ask myself, “Why would this person say this?” That kind of perspective makes my recent songs feel more like films or dramas. Often, I start with just one phrase—like this time, “Roll The Dice”—and build the narrative around that through something like a mental mind map.
Your music often draws from personal experiences with love, aiming to blend masculinity and sensuality. How do you approach vulnerability in your songwriting to create such relatable and emotional tracks?
Rovv: To me, vulnerability is the strongest emotion there is. I feel like we’re in a time where being honest holds more power than trying to act cool. So instead of hiding things, I try to show them. Instead of avoiding, I try to confront. I believe that kind of honesty can become comfort or even courage for someone else.Of course, I still want to look cool and show my best side too, but I’m learning to be more real, even in that.
You toured 17 cities in 2023 with The Good Days Boys. How did that global experience influence your music and your perspective as an artist, and do you plan to tour again soon?
Rovv: The tour completely expanded my perspective. The energy on stage, the different reactions in each city, and all the cultural nuances gave me endless inspiration. It also helped me understand more clearly where I want to go as an artist. There aren’t any new tour dates confirmed just yet, but if you guys keep listening and spreading the music, I’d love to bring the show to even more cities. Help make me more famous! Haha
With millions of streams and a growing global fanbase, what’s next for Rovv? Are there upcoming projects, collaborations, or goals you’re excited to share with your fans?
Rovv: I want to go beyond just releasing songs and start sharing a full Rovv universe! I’m currently working on my full-length album, and I have some really exciting collaborations lined up too. There’s also a visual project coming that will dive even deeper into the stories I want to tell. Above all, my biggest goal is to visit more cities and connect with fans face to face. Can’t wait to see you all! Thank you for sticking with me!
